چکیده

Recently, there has been a great effort to extract the phase of chaotic attractors and complex oscillators. As a consequence many phases have been introduced, as example the standard phase θ based on the rotation of the vector position, and the phase φ based on the rotation of the tangent vector. Despite of the large interest in the phase dynamics of coupled oscillators there is still a lack of approaches that analyze whether these phase are equivalent and on what conditions these phases work. In this work, we show that the phase φ generalizes the standard phase θ , and it is equal to the length of the Gauss map, the generator of the curvature in differential geometry. Furthermore, we demonstrate, for a broad class of attractors, that the phase synchronization phenomenon between two coherent chaotic oscillators is invariant under the phase definition. Moreover, we discuss to which classes of oscillators the defined phases can be used to calculate quantities as the average frequency and the average period of oscillators. Finally, we generalize the phase φ which allows its use also to homoclinic attractors. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. PACS: 05.45.-a; 05.45.Ac; 05.45.Xt

Super Persistent Chaotic Transients in Physical Systems: Effect of noise on phase Synchronization of Coupled Chaotic oscillators

A super persistent chaotic transient is typically induced by an unstable–unstable pair bifurcation in which two unstable periodic orbits of the same period coalesce and disappear as a system parameter is changed through a critical value. So far examples illustrating this type of transient chaos utilize discrete-time maps. We present a class of continuous-time dynamical systems that exhibit supe...

Engineering of synchronization and clustering of a population of chaotic chemical oscillators.

Description, control, and design of weakly interacting dynamical units are challenging tasks that play a central role in many physical, chemical, and biological systems. Control of temporal and spatial variations of reaction rates is especially daunting when the dynamical units exhibit deterministic chaotic oscillations that are sensitive to initial conditions and are long-term unpredictable. C...

Effect of common noise on phase synchronization in coupled chaotic oscillators.

We report a general phenomenon concerning the effect of noise on phase synchronization in coupled chaotic oscillators: the average phase-synchronization time exhibits a nonmonotonic behavior with the noise amplitude. In particular, we find that the time exhibits a local minimum for relatively small noise amplitude but a local maximum for stronger noise. We provide numerical results, experimenta...

Rapid convergence of time-averaged frequency in phase synchronized systems.

Numerical and experimental evidences are presented to show that many phase synchronized systems of nonidentical chaotic oscillators, where the chaotic state is reached through a period-doubling cascade, show rapid convergence of the time-averaged frequency. The speed of convergence toward the natural frequency scales as the inverse of the measurement period. The results also suggest an explanat...

Phase synchronization of chaotic oscillators by external driving

We extend the notion of phase locking to the case of chaotic oscillators. Different definitions of the phase are discussed, and the phase dynamics of a single self-sustained chaotic oscillator subjected to external force is investigated. We describe regimes where the amplitude of the oscillator remains chaotic and the phase is synchronized by the external force. This effect is demonstrated for ...
